Ben's Bio

Ben C. Bernstein

Ben is a meteorologist that has specialized in aircraft icing and related subjects for the last 17 years.  He was one of the lead developers of the suite of official icing products available on the Aviation Digital Data Service, namely Current Icing Product (CIP) and Forecast Icing Product (FIP).

Ben has worked with the NTSB on numerous icing accident investigations, including the crashes of an ATR-72 at Roselawn, Indiana in 1994, an EMB-120 at Monroe, Michigan in 1997, and more recent ones, such as one involving a Cessna Citation Jet that crashed near Pueblo, Colorado.  Ben has also published quite a bit on icing and freezing precipitation, including analyses of how often these phenomena occur, where and why.   See his long list of publications on icing.

His current focus is working with aircraft manufacturers from around the globe to help them achieve certification for flight in known icing conditions.  He's been working closely with the test pilots and flight test engineers for aircraft ranging from helicopters and small prop aircraft on up to regional jets.
